We ROCk!

We are learning about rocks in science.

We learned that when observing a rock, scientists use their senses.

They look with their eyes. Feel with their hands, Smell with their noses.

They also perform a scratch test. Which rock is harder? The one that makes a scratch in another rock is the hardest.

What about a scratch test with white or black paper? What happens?

We learn about a rock's properties with these exercises.

Rock properties include: color, shape, size, texture, sheen and weight.

Using a magnifying glass helps us see more details, too.

Mr. Ficken's Gift of Time

Mr. Ficken annually treats each classroom to a holiday story as his gift of time.

Here is the story if you'd like to ask your child about the message.

Thank you, Mr. Ficken, for spending time with us.

Did You Say Parrallelogram?

We are learning about parallelograms, trapezoids, polygons, and quadrilaterals.
Polygon = many sided figure
Parallelogram = figure with 2 sets of equal sides
quadrilaterals = 4 sided figure

When we talk about these shapes, we learn more and when we play games with them, like a sorting game, we really understand these concepts in a deeper way.

It's All about the Collaboration

Learning is much more fun and meaningful when we have a shared experience.

Collaborating allows us to experience a richer experience and reach deeper meaning.
 Collaborating allows us to practice our speaking and listening skills, as well.

 Partner reading is one of our favorite activities.
