Watering and Measuring

We needed to water our babies because we know they need the following elements to survive and thrive: water, space, oxygen, sunlight and nutrients.

Most of the time, Mother Nature provides the water with the rain. Sometimes, Mother Nature provides many days of sunshine without rain, so we have to provide the water.

 

Mother Nature provides sunshine every single day. The plants use the sunshine to create their own food. Additionally, the roots pull nutrients from the soil.

Here is the "before" shot. We will provide an "after" shot in a few weeks before we take the babies home to nurture and observe - like the real scientists we are.

The power of observation is one of a scientists best characteristics and job requirements.

Another job we must perform as scientists is measuring growth.

We worked in partners to get this job done well.

Here is our class plant. It is 40 cm tall at the start. Let's watch it grow and thrive.

 

Kent Parks Planting Day

The entire second grade listened to a presentation by Kent Parks Victoria regarding planting our Vine Maples and the benefits of planting trees and bushes for our environment.

Victoria also taught us how to take care of our new "babies," and when to plant them in October - on Halloween! Leave your babies in their pots until Halloween and then plant them in the ground, so they have more space to grow.

She taught us how to use our "tool" - our first finger - to figure out when we should water our plants. If the soil is still moist when we stick our finger in the soil, we do not need to water the plant.

Math Night Extravaganza!

Look at those delicious Mrs. Britt cookies! They are numbers that were gobbled up in a big hurry, and served by our Kentwood students need community service hours.

Second grade was rocking with math games in Room 206! Yes, we hosted the event.

St. Patrick's Day Palooza

We celebrated St. Patrick's Day with Leprechaun Traps, Leprechaun Math, and writing about How to Make a Leprechaun Trap! It was a great day after we cleaned up our classroom. Those tricky leprechauns trashed our room!
