Bat Lady Barb Visits

These products are the affects of bats! Bats are pollinators, so they help us with vanilla beans, chewing gum, cashew nuts, bananas, and pain relievers.

Barb shows us a vampire bat model.

This is a puppet of a very small microbat called a Little Brown bat which lives in our part of the world.

Bats like to hang upside down unless they are going to the bathroom or giving birth.

Barb has a fabulous slide show. Here is a vampire bat.

Here is a slide projector. This is what a slide show was prior to digital slide shows.

Here is Robato. He is a Little Brown bat that Barb cares for in her home.

This is Cleobatra. She is a Hoary Bat. Hoary means she looks like she has a dusting of powder on her fur.

A bumblebee bat is the world's smallest bat. A Flying Fox is the world's largest bat.

A big thanks to Barb for coming to see us and sharing her program with us. We learned that bats are our friends.

Tiny Topics Notebooks

These are our Tiny Topics Notebooks.
They are for writing.

We use them to collect topics for our writerly lives.

We took a tour of our school to find some topics for our Tiny Topics Notebooks.

Then we shared out our topics we wrote down during our tour.

It's good to share ideas.

We want to help each other be better writers. We have that power in our classroom.

Taproot Theater

Mr. Ficken introduces the Taproot Theatre troupe to our school.

They are here to perform, "Allies Ahoy!" This performance is to help recognize bullying behaviors.

Once the behaviors are recognized, then the behaviors should be reported to an adult.

Once the behaviors are reported to an adult, the students should refuse to participate in bullying behaviors or allow them to happen.

Bullying Behaviors:
Recognize
Report
Refuse

Tadpoles | Pollywogs

A kindergarten parent and her son were accidentally raising pollywogs all summer. She offered the classes some of their tadpoles. I accepted - gladly! I was so excited to bring life science into our classroom.
Once we got them, we needed to figure out what to do with them. How does a scientist go about housing tadpoles? What are their needs? What do they need to eat?

We came up with these and other questions. Then we did some research with books and online sites.

We also studied the lifecycle of a tadpole and found that they hibernate in the winter, so we knew we couldn't keep them for too long.

One of our students even wrote a poem about our friends, the tadpoles.
